Visiting Outreach Families

Each year, some of the most joyful and heartbreaking days of our adventure are the Outreach Visits to our Bakhita children living in rural villages. They live in extreme poverty – no water on the premises, occasional electricity, and often no food other than a bit of maize meal. These kids live with guardians, grannies or possibly a part-time parent who struggles with mental or physical illness. Sometimes, we pitch in and help the children tidy the house before fixing them a meal.

We bring to each child a bag of gifts, hand-picked just for them by generous and loving friends in the USA. The guardian receives a food parcel that will feed the family for several weeks.

A few friends donate bulk items that we take to the villages with us. We give these gifts to extended family or neighbors who show up when we arrive.
As we traveled on a red-dirt road in a very poor area, some boys were following our vehicle and we were able to pull over and hand out boy’s leather-like bracelets to all of them. Imagine the delight when a child who has so little goes home with a new shirt, dress, colored pencils, bracelets, or cute beanie babies. We just wish all of you could be here to share in the delight.
